The role of cancer markers in malignant mesothelioma

The role of cancer markers in malignant mesothelioma: a retrospective study. Abdullah Cetin Tanrikulu

2 INTRODUCTION

Malignant Mesothelioma (MM) is seen frequently in some parts of our country due to environmental asbestos and erionite contact.

3 BACKGROUND Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in MM patients

Carbohydrate antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3)
Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9)
Carbohydrate antigen 72-4 (CA 72-4)
Carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA 125)
alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)
The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic value as a tumor marker retrospectively.

4 MATERIALS AND METHODS

The files of 30 MM (20 pleural and 10 peritoneal) patients who were followed up at Dicle University hospital and had cancer marker results were retrospectively analyzed.

5 RESULTS The mean age of the patients was 54.6 ± 13.9 years.
Environmental asbestos exposure was positive in 22 patients (73%)
Average of environmental asbestos contact time is 23 years

6 FINDINGS Histopathological type; 17 patients (57%) were epithelial
5 patients (16%) sarcomatous
8 patients (27%) were not identified.

7 RESULTS Mean duration of symptoms 5.15 months Most common symptoms
shortness of breath 63%
Weight Loss 56%
chest pain 50%

8 FINDINGS 20 of the patients with pleural MM
7 (35%) positive pleural fluid cytology
A total of 18 patients
12 patients were diagnosed with non-operative methods.

9 FINDINGS
The mean levels of CA125, CEA and CA15-3 were higher than laboratory values.
Mean levels of other markers were normal in MM patients

10 RESULTS Table 1. Tumor marker levels of patients
11 DISCUSSION
One study reported high CA 125 levels in MM patients Creaney J, Chest. 2007:
In other studies, CA125 MM patients have been reported to be elevated, especially in patients with high tumor burden.
Hedman M, Anticancer Res 2003, Kebapci M, Eur Radiol 2003, Simsek H, Tumour Biol 1996
In a study conducted in our country, CA-125 levels were reported to be high in patients with lung cancer Kararmaz E, İzmir Chest Diseases Journal 2010

12 DISCUSSION
In a study of pleural fluids, the mean CEA level in malignant fluids was 28.86 ng / ml.
Borazan A, Respiratory Diseases 2001
CEA level was found to be 2.54 in a study evaluating various thoracic cancers Koçer B, Bidder Medical Journal 2010
The mean CEA level in this study was 4.99 ng / ml and increased moderately.

13 In this study, CA 15-3 level was found to be 36.47 U / mL.
DISCUSSION
In one study, mean CA 15-3 level in malignant fluids was found to be 108.55 ± 150.43 U / mL. Borazan A, Respiratory Diseases 2001
In a study investigating thoracic cancers, the mean CA 15-3 level was found as Koçer B, Bidder Medical Journal 2010
In this study, CA 15-3 level was found to be 36.47 U / mL.

14 CONCLUSION
There are few studies on the role of tumor markers in MM patients.
In these patients, extensive series and controlled studies are needed to determine the values of these markers in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment follow-up.
